The Short Vowels Series of 5 sequential reading activity books embrace a well-defined systematic phonics-based approach, as learners are first introduced to short vowels which are the foundation of fluent reading. Short vowel words are in simple patterns (such as CVC words) that are more consistent for beginning readers to decode and spell. All lessons in each book have colorful graphics, funny poems, engaging stories, activity questions, and drawing activities. Readers are challenged to make rhyming word families (ex.- bat, cat, mat, Nat, rat, sat), acquire new sight words, and apply them in various structured activity sections.

Progressing through grade levels, readers will comfortably advance through the literal, inferential, and evaluative comprehension levels. Beginning with the literal level of understanding, learners read facts and other basic information. They are assured that answers to questions and activities are directly stated in the text and that there is only one right answer. Proceeding to the inferential comprehension level, readers are eased into deeper thinking with “reading between the lines.” Answers to these questions and activities require drawing conclusions and making inferences from information not directly stated. Readers gently advance to the evaluative comprehension level as they more deeply understand information that requires making judgment based on facts, as well as supporting viewpoint with personal and opinionated answers.

Following the book order of the Short Vowels Series is essential for learners to successfully recognize vowel group families, transfer their phonetic sounds for reading fluency in decoding new words, increase sight word recognition and vocabulary, strengthen comprehension skills, and display spelling accuracy. Upon completion of Book 5, readers will have developed advanced skills of comprehending factual stories based on informational text: science, history, significant people, and important events. Readers will have also mastered the meanings of occasional inflected endings, prefixes and suffixes, contractions, compound words, abbreviations, cardinal and ordinal numbers, dates, idioms, and word symbols.
